Barcode FAQ

Answers to common questions about buying and using UPC and EAN barcodes from Speedy Barcodes.

Do I need to choose between UPC and EAN barcodes?

No. Every Speedy Barcodes package includes both UPC and EAN barcode formats for the purchased product identifiers. You do not need to purchase separate UPC and EAN packages.

If I buy 100 barcodes, do I get 100 UPC and 100 EAN barcodes?

Yes. A 100-barcode package provides the UPC and corresponding EAN formats for 100 unique product identifiers. The UPC and EAN versions are two formats for those 100 identifiers; they do not represent 200 different products.

What is a UPC barcode?

UPC-A is a 12-digit product identification format commonly used for retail products in the United States and Canada.

What is an EAN barcode?

EAN-13 is a 13-digit product identification format widely used for retail products internationally.

What is the difference between UPC and EAN barcodes?

UPC-A contains 12 digits and is particularly common in the United States and Canada. EAN-13 contains 13 digits and is widely used internationally. Speedy Barcodes packages include both formats.

How many barcodes do I need?

You generally need one unique product identifier for each unique product or product variation. Different sizes, colors, flavors, styles, models, or package quantities that are tracked as separate products generally need separate identifiers.

Do I need separate barcodes for different sizes?

Generally, yes. If different sizes are separate inventory items, each size should have its own unique product identifier.

Do I need separate barcodes for different colors or flavors?

Generally, yes. If each color or flavor is sold and tracked as a separate product variation, each variation should have its own unique product identifier.

Do the barcodes expire?

Speedy Barcodes sells its barcode packages as a one-time purchase and does not charge annual renewal fees for continued use of the purchased barcode numbers.

Are there annual fees?

There are no annual renewal fees from Speedy Barcodes for continued use of the barcode numbers you purchase.

How are my barcodes delivered?

Your barcode package is delivered digitally after your order is processed.

What files do I receive?

Packages include high-resolution barcode graphics in JPG, PDF, and EPS formats, along with organized barcode information in Excel and PDF spreadsheet formats.

Can I print the barcode directly on my product packaging?

Yes. Barcode graphics can be incorporated into product packaging or printed onto labels. The files can be provided to your graphic designer, packaging company, manufacturer, or label printer. Make sure the final printed barcode meets appropriate size, contrast, placement, and print-quality requirements before producing large quantities.

Can I use the same barcode on different products?

No. Each unique product or product variation should generally have its own unique product identifier. Reusing one identifier for unrelated products can create problems in inventory and retail systems.

Can I use these barcodes with Shopify?

UPC and EAN numbers can be used as product identifiers within Shopify product catalogs. Whether a barcode is required depends on how and where your products are being sold.

Can I use these barcodes with eBay, Etsy, Google Shopping, or other marketplaces?

Marketplace requirements vary by platform, product category, brand, and seller account, and requirements can change. If you are purchasing barcodes specifically for a third-party marketplace, verify that marketplace's current product-identifier requirements before ordering.

Can I use these barcodes in physical retail stores?

UPC and EAN barcodes are widely used to identify products in retail environments. The barcode number is typically associated with the product in the retailer's inventory or point-of-sale system.

Can I buy barcodes in bulk?

Yes. Speedy Barcodes offers larger packages for businesses that need hundreds or thousands of product identifiers. Larger packages can reduce the cost per barcode and still include both UPC and EAN formats.

What types of products can use UPC or EAN barcodes?

UPC and EAN product identifiers are used across many consumer-product categories, including clothing, food and beverages, cosmetics, electronics, toys, grocery items, household products, handmade products, and many other packaged retail goods.

What do I do after receiving my barcode numbers?

Assign one unique product identifier to each unique product or variation, keep a record of those assignments, and provide the appropriate barcode image to your designer, printer, manufacturer, retailer, or inventory system as needed.

Still Have Questions?

If you are unsure how many product identifiers you need, review your unique products and variations before ordering. For marketplace-specific use, verify the current requirements of the marketplace where you plan to sell.
